Hood Park – 6 Stack Street GALLERY The innovative design for this .5 acre public park was crafted as a part of the revitalization of the historic Hood Park into a contemporary mixed-use community. The open space is maximized with a tilted lawn and connected roof deck above a new bike pavilion designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects. The interior programming includes bike storage, a shower facility, and public restrooms to promote bike commuting to Hood Park’s office spaces. The sloped lawn plane creates a passive recreation space above the predicted future base flood elevation in Boston that can also be used as a flexible performance space, with a stage incorporated into the accessible walkway route that leads to the public roof deck. The vegetated roof deck provides a programmable space for functions, public use, and views of the performance area and the highly recognizable Boston landmark, the historic Hood Milk industrial stack. In addition to open space and pavilion amenities, the planting has been designed to create a buffer between the site and the nearby interstate. The trees selected will not only screen the view but will also help reduce air pollution and any potential groundwater pollution with phytoremediation properties. Designed with natural plant communities in mind, the site is organized into a series of landscapes inspired by natural wetlands, meadows, shrublands and woodlands and is composed of plants selected for their ability to disperse seed and replenish the native seed bank. A vegetated bioswale integrates the site and the streetscape, capturing and cleansing stormwater.
