Pier 5 Association independently engaged an engineer company to report on the continued viability of engineering reports commissioned by BPDA (2000 prepared by Fay, Spofford and Thorndike, and from 1987, 2004 and 2017, performed by Childs Engineering Corporation).
A recent Preliminary Report from DeSimone states:
Anticipated loads from a public occupancy such as a park would certainly be within the original design capacities of the pier elements and would offer flexibility on the scope/extent remediation required as opposed to other uses which would require the pier to be restored to its previous full design capacity.
Childs and DeSimone reports both indicate that Pier 5 can be retained, under specific conditions without total demolition, for potential re-use with Pedestrian load Open Space Park type use.”
The BRA recently announced its decision to have a park vs privatization. A great milestone! The BRA is responsible for some, if not all Pier 5 renovations because of their lack of stewardship.
