With Mother Earth’s cooperation, there was beautiful weather for the Earth Day celebration on the Harborwalk in front of Pier 5 in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Organized by the Pier 5 Association (www.pier5.org) and thanks to the many volunteers and exhibitors, the event was a tremendous success with more than 350 people and over a dozen exhibitors attending throughout the day.
It was wonderful to see young families with their children enjoying a family outing, taking part in free Cycleboat rides courtesy of Cycleboat Boston; engaging with “The Bubbleman” making gigantic bubbles; hopping aboard a Boston Fire Truck; creating miniature sailboats courtesy of Courageous Sailing Center; making recycled book marks from magazines; and appreciating the various mollusks at the Pier 5 “Petting Zoo”. The band, Doghouse All Stars, was back by popular demand for a repeat performance after their appearance at our celebration of Pier 5 last summer.
There was great participation by neighbors in support of the Harvest on Vine Food Pantry, selling raffle tickets for a chance to win very generous restaurant gift certificates. The Food Bank raised over $500 and also received donations of canned goods. Thank you to all who participated.
We are so grateful to the Boston Fire Department who brought a fire engine for the children to explore and distributed colorful fire hats for the kids. More importantly, Lt. Henry Perkins of the Fire Education Unit demonstrated safe cooking practices and introduced us to safety features and alarms for those who are hard of hearing. We have attached more information on these important devices and the end of this article. Thank you again, one and all, for such enthusiastic support of our event. www.pier5.org
