The “Imagine Boston 2030″ program defines the need for waterfront public access with connected open space. As described by Richard McGuinness, Deputy Director for Climate Change and Environmental Planning at the Boston Planning & Development Agency:

“An activated waterfront is anchored by varied types of open spaces, featuring cultural resources and year-round programming and connecting people with the natural, cultural, and economic history of the region.”

To do so, Boston must ensure that Pier 5 is developed into greenspace, a living shoreline, a climate berm and waterfront park for everyone. Assuring Climate Resiliency, preservation of marine environment, view sheds, marine life, birds, coral reefs, air quality for the best interest of all. Boston is behind leading global Resilient Cities.

  • Removing a uniquely historic site from public use and encroaching on the open water is ill conceived, and wrong.
  • Residential development is a mistake.
  • Courageous Sailing, our beloved and globally recognized public sailing center provides valuable learning for children is endangered by private development.
  • Historic Pier 5 should be an amenity for all to enjoy.
  • Please learn more and make your voice heard.

Some see unmaintained piers as a shameful show of previous generations’ disregard. Instead, they give character and commemorate Boston’s history providing reflection on the heroes of industry and warfare that brought us here today. There is an opportunity for Boston to make healthful and ecological long term decisions. Our moral return on investment is to keep important public space, public.
